Dalhousie has come a long way since it introduced its first scent-free initiative in 1995. It is a leader among Canadian universities in scent reduction initiatives and has been joined by other area organizations, including the Halifax Regional Municipality, the Halifax Regional School Board, and many other organizations in the municipality and across the region.
There is a growing understanding that harm is caused to many people from exposure to scented products. Scented products make them sick. The law is also moving towards protection of people with environmental sensitivities. For example, the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission will consider discrimination complaints by persons with chemical sensitivities on the bases that they have a disability.
To maintain a healthful and quality environment for staff, patients, visitors, learners, etc, the Capital Health District Authority has adopted a scent-free and smoke-free environment that applies to all areas.
Scented products contain chemicals that cause serious problems for many people especially those with allergies, environmental illnesses, asthma, etc. All scented personal products are to be avoided, perfumes, cologne, aftershave, deodorant/antiperspirants, talc, lotions and/or hair sprays. Unscented and fragrance-free products are available commercially - if in doubt ask.
We don't smoke here any more! As of May 31, 2003, tobacco use is prohibited on Capital Health properties or grounds, including inside a vehicle parked on Capital Health property.
